Anxiety

Anxiety is a fancy word for fear - one of our most basic of feelings. And specifically anxiety is about a fear of the future.

We all get anxious from time to time and it can be both distracting on one hand and motivating on the other, especially when we realize it's really about excitement for something to happen. But there's another kind of anxiety that when it creeps in can be debilitating and sometimes even extremely dangerous for you and for others, frequently resulting in actions or inactions that we later come to regret.

Anxiety is also highly contagious. Adults struggling with anxiety themselves can unconsciously or consciously impact vulnerable dependents into believing they too are in some danger inadvertently causing then anxiety to spread. This can happen in many small ways that are not even particularly apparent and some can be more blatant but both have an affect on relationships, on families, on teams at work, and in all sorts of group settings and even in whole cities, countries and regions of the world.

The worst thing about anxiety is that it puts us on drama triangles where we start sorting people as friend or foe. People jostle for who is the victim, the hero and the villain. As human beings we are exceptionally prone to falling into these dramas as they tap into a primal part of us. If however it gets out of control anxiety can take over like a virus and combined with the drama triangle can easily escalate to run your life.

Many people would assert that we are in a chronic experience of anxiety as a society today for which there are peaks of acute phases followed by rounds of sideways disorientation and generalized confusion.

Anxiety sufferers report a loss of focus outside of what is purely down to what they believe is immediately necessary for their survival in advance of what the future they fear might bring. Often this is then a self-fulfilling catch 22 in that they then create their reality to result in what they feared most.
